Case studies in music therapy
Description:
  • xvii, 638 p. : ill. ; 23 cm.
  • "Of all of the books I own about music therapy, this is by far my favorite and the most used of any of them. During my graduate training in music therapy, I referred to this book many times. It is not only informative, educational and an amazing reference on many different types of music therapy, but it's enjoyable to read, creative and many times quite moving. Although an in-depth clinical resource, it also could convey clearly to the layperson what music therapy is all about. Additionally, the loving care these therapists put into their work with the clients comes across on every page. Drawings, musical notations, extensive bibliographies and indexes all add to the usefulness of this book. Although published over 15 years ago, the material rings fresh, new and true all throughout. I can't say enough about this book! As a music therapist in training, you might be required to buy this book, and I can tell you that you will not regret one penny you spend on it. My only wish would be that they come out with more volumes of this wonderful resource and maybe an indestructible version, because mine is very well worn. This is one book I will never part with." • "Forensic Music Therapy demonstrates diverse and innovative approaches, which include live, improvised and pre-composed music, from music therapy teams working in secure treatment settings. The book covers clinical development, research, supervision and discussion of institutional and multi-disciplinary team dynamics. It will inform professionals about different ways to manage challenging situations in order to deliver music therapy with adults and adolescents who have committed offences, men and women with personality disorders and mental health problems, as well as men who have killed. The book also describes the development of Cognitive Analytic Music Therapy: the first manualised form of music therapy to be used in the rehabilitation of offenders. Chapters include case studies and service developments informed by theories from an established range of psychological therapies including psychoanalysis, cognitive analytic therapy, musicology and forensic psychotherapy. The significant variations and considerations when working in low, medium and high secure treatment settings are also clarified." - BOOK JACKET

  • Many young people rely on music to guide them through the good and bad times of their lives. Whether immersing themselvse in music to help process emotions or creating music as a means of self-expression, it provides a powerful outlet that can help young people navigate the turbulence of adolescence. Centered around the three key areas of emotion, identity, and connectedness, the 'Handbook of Music, Adolescents, and Wellbeing' provides insights into the relationship between music and young people, exploring questions such as: why do teenages have such a passionate relationship with music? Why is this even more apparent and important during times of difficulty? How can music be utilized to enhance wellbeing? With 26 authors from around the globe, this book canvasses a wide range of perspectives, from the most scientific to the most practical. Each chapter contains insightful stories from the authors' own experiences working with young people, and brings together the latest theory, research, and practice from the fields of music therapy, music psychology, music education, and music sociology to explore and understand how and why music plays such a big part in young lives. This book will be of interest to music therapists, youth workers, social workers, psychologists, counsellors, occupational therapists, teachers, and parents.
