Publisher: Las Vegas, NV Sensory Resources 2005Description: 44 p. : col. ill. ; 21 cm.ISBN: 1931615160.Subject(s): JUVENILE LITERATURE | SENSORY DISORDERS | SENSORY INTEGRATIVE DYSFUNCTIONSummary: "Finally, a book for children, written from the child's perspective, that describes what it is like living with a sensory processing disorder. It allows us to change places with the child. This book will help many children and adults alike to understand why events most people perceive as pleasurable, may be disastrous for someone living with DSI. I hope it will promote knowledge, compassion and understanding for those living with DSI. - Janet Stafford" - BOOK JACKETReview: This is a lovely children’s book that will delight children and adults alike. It looks at birthday parties (and being a friend) through the eyes of a child with Sensory Processing Disorder. The child’s feelings are expressed simply and with honesty. The colourful illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to the text which explains so well the difficulty of attending a birthday party; the issues of crowds, lots of noise, different food, and how scary and confusing loud and ‘violent’ party games like piñata can be. Even turning the lights off to blow out the candles on the cake can be bewildering. This simple story reassures the child, and the parents, that you can still be a good friend and celebrate a friend’s birthday without going to the birthday party. This is a useful and encouraging book for children with SPD as well as their siblings, friends, parents and teachers.
