A Pilot Study
2017
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
55 (3) June 2017: 125-139
1934-9491
The present study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed at determining the effects of a dog-assisted treatment program on the behavior, communication, and basic social skills of adults with severe to profound levels of ID. We hypothesized that animal assisted therapies (AAT) may have a relevant and independent effect on people's behavior and social abilities. The secondary purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of AAT with dogs as a supportive tool for the rehabilitation of people with severe mental and/or physical disabilities.
