"This guide explains in straightforward language exactly what Down's syndrome is, how to accept the diagnosis and move forward. It will help during the early years by providing information on what support is available [UK], how to help your child reach developmental milestones and how to choose a childlcare setting. Education [and] other issues such as how to cope with new family dynamics, health risks, working with professionals, finance and the transition towards adulthood are covered." - BOOK JACKET
A fantastic resource for anyone with a child with Down’s Syndrome or who is caring for one.” From the Interconnections Electronic Bulletin about children and young people (0-25) with disabilities / special needs
Antonia and Victoria have written a compact and yet very full book about Down Syndrome; it will make an excellent introduction for parents after the first diagnosis for their child. It can also be returned to as the years go by as it discusses many issues that develop over time.
Some of these are rarely discussed, finance being one. The fact that many parents may have to change from full time work to full time home life is just one factor. As this is an English publication some of the information may not fit the New Zealand situation, but at least it will prompt discussion and ideas on how to go forward.
The book winds up with a look at the transition from childhood to adult life. The authors consider issues linked to developing an independent life style including leaving home, educational development and finding work.
Parents, carers and professionals will all find the information interesting, supportive and useful.
