The author notes in the introduction to this book that “Only 7 percent of emotional meaning is expressed with the use of words, while 55 percent is conveyed through facial expression, body language and gestures.” Added to this is the fact that some individuals are not able to read facial expressions effectively and/or are not able to use facial expressions to convey what they are feeling.
This book, then, is about non-verbal communication. The author believes that although some may have difficulty mastering the nuances on their own, all can make progress when the skills are directly and systematically taught and presents a curriculum that has been developed to “specifically meet the needs of those with autism spectrum and similar disorders.”
The introduction of the book explains the basics of the method. Unit 1 covers recognising facial expressions, Unit 2 with understanding emotions, Unit 3 with intensity and variations of emotions and Unit 4 with other emotions.
Each section uses drawings, cartoons, word cards, blank faces, photographs and templates for the various learning activities.
A CD-ROM is included which contains a printable PDF file of the entire book.
