Children's attention, motivation and learning of words was compared in a behavioural programme and an educational software programme. Children with autism were more attentive, more motivated, and learned more vocabulary in the computer than in the behavioural programme. Implications are considered for the development of computer software to teach vocabulary to children who have autism.
