Students with Down syndrome need direct instruction to learn the basic tools of drawing. Each step in the drawing process, including making marks and scribbling, drawing lines, shapes and objects, requires teaching at each stage. The 'Teaching Drawing Skills' program has been written as a resource for teachers and support personnel working with students with Down syndrome. It outlines the specific areas of difficulty common to these students in learning a fine motor task, as well as the prerequisite skills necessary for students to succeed in drawing. This resource describes the development from grasping drawing implements to gripping and gives a detailed list of equipment that is appropriate at each stage of the drawing program.
