Summary: "Why I am me" is a story about a boy called Sam who has CHARGE syndrome and his friend Jess. As the story progresses Jess learns about CHARGE syndrome and the challenges Sam faces on a day-to-day basis... The idea for this book was sparked by questions asked by a young person with CHARGE. As a result the book is written from a unique perspective. The story is supported by medical information, diagrams and photographs of children and young persons with CHARGE in New Zealand and Australia." - PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE Suitable for children, adolescents, parents, caregivers, friends. "A great resource that will help everyone understand CHARGE syndrome." - BOOK JACKETReview: ‘I laughed and cried both times I read this book. A great resource that will help everyone understand CHARGE syndrome.’ – Teacher of children with hearing and vision disabilities, Victoria. This book from the CHARGE Syndrome Association of Australasia is (as the jacket states: “an action packed, fun filled text bursting with facts that every child with CHARGE syndrome wishes you knew. It contains activities and examples that help you understand how it feels to have CHARGE syndrome and loads of information to answer your questions about this condition.” There is heaps of information here and the text is quite wordy, so probably suitable for children aged seven years plus. But equally of interest for parents, care givers, teachers, siblings and extended family. The layout, colourful photos and illustrations are somewhat messy looking but convey a light hearted ambience in the face of fairly daunting facts. Questions asked and answered include, inter alia, What are the characteristic signs of CHARGE syndrome? How did I get CHARGE syndrome? Will my child still have CHARGE syndrome in adulthood? Why does my best friend spend so much time in hospital with CHARGE syndrome? Will I get CHARGE syndrome if someone else in the family has it? How can I help my students with CHARGE syndrome to learn more easily? This is an extremely welcome addition to the Library’s collection, as resources about this syndrome are quite sparse, and as well, of course, it’s extremely well done.
