Summary: "Some people with learning disabilities choose to work for themselves. In this DVD, we get to know six people with a range of disabilities and who have very different micro-businesses. These include selling quality products like fine art greetings cards and prints, pet food and bedding, pies, quiches and ice cream. We also meet a jobbing gardener and a man with an egg round serving hundreds of customers. We learn about how they got started, what support they receive and their plans for the future. Above all we find out what they get out of running their own businesses and why self-employment is a real option for some people." - DVD COVERReview: Self advocate David Corner thought this was a good DVD, showing that self employment is a positive and viable alternative for some people with an intellectual disability. However he felt that “Supported Self employment” would be a more accurate title as all the people shown needed varying levels of support to establish and run their businesses. This support was both financial and practical, coming from families as well as an agency called Mi Enterprise. David commented that all the stories are success stories as all the people shown grew in confidence, became more independent, developed new skills and needed less support as time went on. This DVD is an encouragement and inspiration to anyone looking at setting up their own business, showing that an idea, a willing attitude and some support can make a dream come true. A must see for families, friends, employers and those who would like to be their own boss.

Good for gathering an improved understanding of micro-enterprise. Was based in the UK so some parts aren't able to crossover to NZ, but general idea of micro-enterprise is still well covered.

Lovely to see these people running their own business. Their stories are great.

Useful for prompting thinking about micro-businesses. Examples set in England so information on support agencies for setting up mico-businesses not applicable here.

This is a fantastic resource. People taliking about their own employment experience and how the supported emplyment agency enabled and supported them in their employment. Gives good ideas of how to best provide that support.
