By: Palacio, R J.
Publisher: New York, NY Alfred A Knopf 2012Description: 315 p. ; 22 cm.ISBN: 9780375869020.Subject(s): FICTION | ABNORMALITIES | FAMILY INTERACTION | SCHOOLS | PEER RELATIONSHIPS | CHILDRENSummary: "August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school - until now. He's about to enter fifth grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid, then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's like them, despite appearances?" - BOOK JACKETReview: “My daughter (10 years old but with a reading level of 14 ) read this and had a lot to say about it. The book really provoked a lot of introspective questions for her. She was able to appreciate the value of true friendship in the book and to recognize with disgust some of the typical community responses. My wife, a special needs teacher, borrowed quite a lot of the teacher’s wisdom and implemented that in her class room. For me: It was wonderful to be inside the head of a person with a disability and the heads of his siblings and parents. It was awesome!!! Since we normally claim not to know what the people we support are really thinking … what they are really feeling and what they are really EXPERIENCING. The book unlocks all of that for you. I believe any person supporting someone with a disability should read this book. Not because it will teach you skills, like 99% of other books, but because it will teach you ATTITUDE. You won’t necessarily learn something upstairs (brain wise) but you will surely have a well deserved HEART change (oil change).” Reviewed by a borrower.

Fiction - Yep and nicely done. Very well portrayed angles on a kid growing into his own skin. Classic happy ending and a page turner! "Precepts" thread nicely done. There's no shortage of kindness in the world so we can all afford to give it out freely :-)

Wow what a book. It's one of those that once you start you can't put down. The humour hits you right from the start. I was up to the fifth chapter within moments of opening the package. It was hard to remember it was only a novel. A very good book.
