"Problems with sleeping are common and make life difficult for the individual who is affected and for those around them. Sleep difficulties are particularly prevalent amongst people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and often cause or worsen other difficulties. This comprehensive guide to the management of sleep problems, introduces all the proven remedies and focuses on the problems commonly found in ASDs and related conditions. The author discusses sleep in depth, including how we currently define and understand it. The full spectrum of sleep disorders is explained alongside the range of possible treatment approaches. The book also examines why some sleep problems are more common among people with an ASD than others, how sleep problems evolve over time, what can be done to treat them and the likely benefits from different treatments." - PUBLISHERS WEBSITE
This book is in five sections. Section A deals briefly with some general questions about sleep; what it is, how we currently understand it and how much too little sleep can affect our minds and bodies. Section B covers sleep disorders in general. Section C deals more specifically with sleep problems in ASD, why some are more common than they are in others and how they evolve over time. Section D deals with a range of issues that can affect sleep and may cause sleep problems to occur or get worse.
Section E, the longest of the sections, deals with the specific sleep problems seen in ASD, what can be done to treat them and the various approaches that are currently advocated. It describes the most common sleep issues in ASD, what they are, how common each seems to be, how likely they are to respond to treatment and their outcomes.
In respect of the appendices covering treatment modalities The author notes that as far as possible “I have tried to discuss approaches where there is published literature demonstrating their effectiveness in ASD. For some of the approaches where there isn’t a strong evidence base I have drawn on my clinical experience of methods that I have found to work, often when more conventional approaches have not.”
An erudite and fascinating read, everything you ever wanted to know about sleep but were afraid to ask.
