Summary: "Tobacco smoking is a major cause of significant ill health in our community. Many people with a mild intellectual disability smoke and little attention has so far been given to developing appropriate strategies to assist them to stop smoking. It was therefore decided to produce a smoking cessation course with the needs of this group in mind. This program is designed for smokers with an intellectual disability to learn more about why they smoke and the effects smoking has upon them. The program encourages them to quit smoking and supports their efforts to do so. The program includes an “I can quit ” or “Stop Smoking Day” to provide a clear goal and to assist them in identifying the areas that will be problematic for them in the transition to becoming non-smokers." -
