By: Lock, Katy.
Series: The Specials. Season 1 ; Episodes 1-10.Publisher: [Brighton?] KADA Films 2009-Description: DVD ; 130 mins.Subject(s): INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY | YOUNG ADULTS | ADOLESCENTS | GROUP HOMES | COMMUNITY LIVING | RELATIONSHIPS | FRIENDSHIPS | TRANSITIONS | COMMUNITY INTEGRATIONSummary: "Meet Sam, Hilly, Lucy, Lewis and Megan. Five housemates with special needs who live the classic student lifestyle in Brighton. Now aged between 19-23 they have been friends since childhood and together share the ups and downs of each other's lives: from first love to heartbreak, from going to college to working 9-5, as well as the day-to-day stuff like arguing over the remote or storming the local karaoke night." - DVD COVERReview: This “in-depth documentary tells the story of how Carol & Dafydd Williams set up 'The Specials' home and helped their daughter Hilly realize her dream of living with her friends.” The home is in Brighton, England The DVD has all 10 episodes from season 1 and follows the daily life of each member of the household. There is Hilly, of course, a student, whose ambition is to be a weather girl. She loves clothes and manicures and tends towards the dramatic. The other people are Megan, Lucy, Sam and Lewis. This is a delightful, honest and revealing look at these young people’s lives, their feelings towards each other, their hopes for the future and their opinions on life generally. What stood out for me was their individuality and confidence and their joy in their pursuits.

Useful in helping some service users to see how other people with ID socialise, interact in a home situation with others like themselves.

I could see the positives but I also felt like it still didn't quite challenge assumptions like group homes etc.

Our Yzone social group loved it. We are thinking of doing our own! Might get it out again real soon. Thanks

The series was entertainment value - it may be useful to parents who are considering a flatting arrangement.

Marvellous! Just how life should be.

what a household! If only we could encourage all residential situations to be the same. A lot of retraining for staff!! This is exactly how it should be - choose own flatmates, make own plans for day to day life, we are getting to be way too "organised" and taking away the individuality of our self advocates.

Great realistic view of a flatting situation. Recommend to families moving into this period of life.

A great example of people with disabilities living ordinary lives.

The DVD is not the easiest to operate. But the actual episodes are delightful - show what a home should be like - people organising themselves, choosing what to do, making decisions. At times very funny & other times poignant. Good for all hands-on staff to watch to see what's possible in a service.

Great entertainment value. A great example of 'everday' issues faced by 'everyone'. Could watch it again and again.
