Temple Grandin
By: Jackson, Mick.
Publisher: Burbank, CA HBO Films 2010Description: DVD: 109 mins.Rating: PG - Parental Guidance Recommended for Younger Viewers.Disc region: Zone 1.Subject(s): AUTISM | BIOGRAPHY | TEMPLE GRANDINSummary: "Temple Grandin" paints a picture of a young woman's perseverance and determination while struggling with the isolating challenges of autism at a time when it was still quite unknown. The film chronicles Temple's early diagnosis; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; the enduring support she received from her mother, aunt and her science teachers, and her emergence as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behaviour." - DVD coverReview: This is an interesting chronicle of Temple Grandin's development from her diagnosis of Autism at age 4 through her school years to her professional life working in the humane livestock handling industry and her first participation as a contributor during an Autism conference. I liked….. …the pace of the film as it reflects the pace of Temple’s life, her interactions and actions and her quiet times. …the narrative that is revealing without pity or condemnation; this is simply the way it is. Those who don’t understand Temple and those who are trying to, are all accorded the opportunity to voice their personal slant. The work ethic prejudices of the time and the obstinate refusal to share in Temple’s views are all there. …the importance placed on family and teacher support. …the ending that is forward looking and supportive. Here we see Temple Grandin speaking at a conference explaining how her own development was fundamentally helped by her mother’s insistence that she went to school, that she learnt and applied herself.Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Date due | Barcode | Item holds | |
