Imagine having Asperger's syndrome : a first consultation

By: Eisenmajer, Richard.
Publisher: Glen Iris, Vic Richard Eisenmajer 2006Description: DVD : 103 mins.Subject(s): ASPERGER SYNDROME | AUTISM | DIAGNOSIS | BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENTSummary: Dr Richard Eisenmajer gives presentations on the subject of Asperger's Syndrome, and autism in general. The purpose of the film is to give an overview of these disorders and provide insight and understanding into the ways people with these conditions think and behave. It seeks to explain the difficulties these people have with social, communication and imagination skills, in order to promote understanding of the condition. It includes anecdotes from the presenter's clinical practice illustrating what the sufferers are like and what it feels like to be them.Review: Dr Richard Eisenmajer is a clinical psychologist with an interest in autism spectrum disorders. He has conducted research into theory of mind abilities in people with autism and Asperger’s syndrome and the diagnostic differentiation of subgroups across the autism spectrum. At his clinic in Glen Iris, Melbourne, he and a team of psychologists under his supervision specialise in the diagnosis and behavioural management of over 2000 individuals with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. This DVD consists of Dr Eisenmajer talking, which you might suspect could be less than arresting. However, you would be wrong. He is witty, urbane, obviously expert in his field and has a commanding but light-handed presence. What makes this so riveting, is his ability to explain why individuals on the spectrum behave as they do and “how they think and experience the world around them”. Having outlined the general deficits common to those with high-functioning autism, he then explains how behaviour is affected by these deficits, and why normal parenting techniques do not work. Describes some procedures and strategies that have proved to be successful, based as they are on an understanding of the “Aspie mind”. Wonderfully entertaining and informative.
