This regular history column takes a look at the Fairview Training Centre which opened in 1908. Its purpose was to take the intellectually disabled citizens of Oregon out of the asylums where they were then housed and into a specialist institution. By the time it finally closed in 2000, an estimated 10,000 people had passed through its doors. They stayed for anything from a few years to their whole lives. A documentary shows how abuse and neglect in this institution led to changes in support and a self advocacy movement that went global. |
