Review |
The information in this book represents the current thinking of professionals who specialise in the medical, psychological, educational and legal aspects of caring for children who have cerebral palsy. The authors state “our goal in writing this book is to help those who care for a child with cerebral palsy understand the child’s needs and how these needs can best be met. In helping the caregivers, of course, our ultimate goal is to help the child.”
The first section offers an overview of the condition, a detailed description of specific patterns of involvement (hemiplegia, diplegia and quadriplegia), the challenges adults with CP face, parent advocacy and health, financial and educational issues (US).
The second section is devoted to caregiving techniques; inter alia, protecting the caregivers back, home modifications, nutrition, tube feeding, braces, walkers, wheelchairs, standers, toilet training, suctioning techniques, pressure management, hospitalisation.
Part three is a cerebral palsy encyclopaedia. This is alphabetically arranged and addresses the many complexities and uncertainties related to a CP diagnosis. At the same time it provides the information caregivers, relatives and professionals need from Achilles tendon lengthening to varus. Also lists support groups, foundations and government agencies as well as recommended reading and toys and where to go to chat with others.
|
