The aims of this review were to (i) explore how persons with intellectual disabilities describe friendships and intimate relationships and (ii) explore what persons with intellectual disabilities think the barriers and supports are to forming and maintaining these relationships. By better understanding the unique perspectives and experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities, caregivers will be better equipped to support relationships and meet the needs of these individuals.
