. xvii, 186 pages ; 20 cm..

Library Staff commented on 20/03/2024: An easy reading book that covers ADHD well in concept. I'm very skeptical of some of the strategies offered which have little evidence to support them. I get the impression that the authors are simply including poorly supported intervention based on their own professional networking.

New comment on Everyday citizenship : seven keys to a life well lived / http://ihc.mykoha.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=42145#comments By Perez, Wendy.

29.

Library Staff commented on 21/02/2024: I used this resource to guide a conversation with a person about what it means to be part of a community. I think the Keys to Citizenship link in very well with the Enabling Good Lives approach, was a little hesitant to be seen to introduce another approach, so didn’t really talk about the overall book and purpose. I really like the concepts and the words, it helped me and the person to focus on the concepts, it helped give some validity to what I was saying. It appeared to me that the person really liked that other’s (rather than me) were giving advice and support. It helped our conversation so much, to have a tool that we both focussed on rather than a face-to-face conversation. We only focussed on a small section to facilitate our conversation, and after a while our chat moved away from the resource and we were able to talk about specific situations that the person was finding tricky. I think there is such value in tools like this to support conversation.

New comment on Art therapy with adults with autism spectrum disorder / http://ihc.mykoha.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=29341#comments By Gonzalez-Dolginko, Beth.

. 124 pages : 23 cm.

Library Staff commented on 30/01/2024: As an autistic creative arts therapist, I was highly disappointed in this book. The author's approach comes from an outdated neurotypical and pathological perspective and is no longer relevant. It does little to distinguish between the levels of autism, painting us all with one brush (pun intended) And it doesn't even mention sensory issues!

. viii, 298 pages ; 23 cm..

Library Staff commented on 30/01/2024: Great for anyone looking to train in this field. Neurodiversity affirming and not relying on stereotypes found in the medical model. It is however heavily cognitive based which is not always effective for all types of neurodiversity.

Library Staff commented on 30/01/2024: A great look at culture and identity of adult autism with highly relevant and current pop culture and art references. Written by an artist with a wealth of knowledge on the lived and perceived experience of being autistic. A really interesting read!

. 262 pages ; 22 cm.

Library Staff commented on 30/01/2024: A beautiful book looking in depth at women that have been "othered" and cast out due to not fitting in to socially accepted views on women. Full of heart, metaphor and sorrow. A beautiful, bitter-sweet exploration of how it feels to be an autistic woman.

New comment on Loud hands : autistic people, speaking / http://ihc.mykoha.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=28674#comments . 290 pages : 24 cm.

Library Staff commented on 15/01/2024: A good anthology of autistic blogs, papers and essays. I found it hard to find something I wanted to read through as each entry felt out of context. Important work but perhaps not the right format for me. Published in 2012 some entries seemed out dated and not relevant.

. 252 pages ; 23 cm.

Library Staff commented on 15/01/2024: Featuring plenty of useful advice for dealing with sensory and emotional challenges prevalent in ASD. Useful having the author's voice saying what works for her as well as research. The author is not a therapist and I did not think all her advice was helpful or therapeutic for people with ASD.

Library Staff commented on 09/01/2024: For academic research purposes. This is a phenomenal, up to date catalogue on autistic masking, well researched and considered. . 1 volume ; 23 cm.

Library Staff commented on 09/01/2024: A good book showing the latest research. However I didn't connect with the suggested exercises to unmask, finding them too head -based, which for me is part of the reason I masked in the first place, being too logical.

. 124 pages ; 21 cm..

Library Staff commented on 09/01/2024: Good if you are just coming to terms with an autism diagnosis and you have the presentation of autism without heavy masking. I personally didn't find it useful but could see others might who have the more stereotypical presentation that doesn't mask as much.
